1 a : a journey or excursion undertaken for a specific purpose b : the group of persons making such a journey
I have been fascinated all of my life with expeditions and all that they entail. The thought of undertaking an epic journey into the unknown with its romance and adventure, its danger and intrigue have filled my mind since childhood. Reading of Lewis and Clark venturing through the wilds of North America with little aid or guide, of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn traveling with out care and absolute freedom along the Mississippi made me yearn to see the unknown and understand life without modern constraints. Stories like Beowulf and those within Greek mythology stirred a desire for adventure and heroism within me. Learning about the expeditions of people like Hillary, Shackleton and Perry made me think that the days of great adventure had come and gone. In many ways I believed this about my life as a Christian as well. I had read and been taught the Bible and all who are in it, Adam and Noah, Abraham and Moses, David and Elijah. Those great men of God who seemed to live such amazing lives in such amazing times. Even Jesus and John and Peter and Paul had lived two thousand years ago. Coming into adulthood we are so bombarded by the pressures of this modern world and life that we think (or at least I thought) that adventure, an epic expedition was out of reach. Then something happened. A few key people in my life started to show me that life in an of itself is an expedition. A grand and epic journey that is not about enduring our years on earth. I started to understand that the beauty of scripture is that its last lines have not yet been fulfilled and I therefore stand in the same time line as all who have gone before me. I saw in people like my great grandmother and my grandparents and others who I met amazing stories of adventure. I came to understand that those who truly seemed to take hold of living out a life with God, and I mean by that journeying with Him- truly living out discipleship, seamed to lead fascinating lives full of opportunity.
Paul seemed to come to understand this as well which I believe is why after listing off a multitude of faithful people he encouraged the Christ followers in Hebrews by penning these words-
Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! ... Hebrews 12:1 (from The Message)
I believe that we, like those who have gone on before us, are on the greatest expedition ever. It is an adventure into the unknown full of struggles and triumphs, dangers and intrigue and opportunities that we can barely conceive. I know that my life has been just that I and I look forward to tomorrow knowing that each adventure simply requires my response.
Today I begin a new opportunity with a group of people who call themselves Adventure Christian Community. This blog is dedicated to my part of the Expedition with them. To you, I pray that together we will cheer one another on, love and support each other, and be there through the stumbles, in each adventure and opportunity along the way. May we continually respond as God leads us to His destination.
What adventure is in your tomorrow??
